In the heart of the Hill Country is Fredericksburg. Surrounded by amazingly beautiful vistas stretching for miles, Fredericksburg, originally a German settlement, is now home to many transplanted big city Texans and Californians wanting a slower pace, in a spectacularly pretty place, with cheaper rent. Despite the demographic shift, Fredericksburg still holds its small town Texas charm and charisma, with just a touch of modern, upscale trendiness. Like a buttermilk pie sprinkled with salted caramel.
We have been to Fredericksburg many times, fortunate to live only about an hour south in the foothills of the Hill Country. On our latest trip, more business than pleasure thus limiting our time, we stopped in at Rather Sweet, Too. Rather Sweet, Too is the sidekick to Rather Sweet Bakery and Café. As its website www.rathersweet.com says, Rather Sweet, Too is a Grab & Go establishment offering both breakfast and lunch items to take with you (although it does have one six top table in the back where you can sit, which is what we did sharing it kindly albeit briefly with another couple).
Rather Sweet, Too offers a variety of made-from-scratch breakfast items, including a wide assortment of muffins, scones, kolaches and cinnamon rolls. We decided on a cinnamon roll as big as Texas, heated to melt-in-your-mouth perfection. The layers thin and buttery, not in the least heavy or gummy, with cinnamon dusted throughout and a nice amount of icing and salty nuts. So delicious! We also ordered a sausage and cheddar cheese kolache. This being a German town, it is only appropriate to have this authentic item on the menu. And arguably you cannot get better German sausage than around these parts. HOLY MOLY it was good! Breaking through the soft flaky roll, the cheese was all melty greatness, oozing out not clumpy or oily, enveloping the incredibly tasty, slightly greasy (not a bad thing) sausage. We washed it all down with finely brewed, wonderfully rich with hints of chocolate, coffee. I left incredibly full and happy having had a superbly complete breakfast consisting of sweet, salty, and caffeine.
While Rather Sweet deems itself “worth every sit-up”, you can easily justify the splurge with the walking you will do going to all the great shops. Or take a jaunt just a bit north to Enchanted Rock and hike this amazing geological and spiritual site, soaking in the beauty and mystery, leaving the calories, or any concern about them, on the trail.
Regardless, if you find yourself in this rather amazing part of the world, you have to give yourself a treat and go to Rather Sweet!
[Bonus Picture: We didn't actually have one of these mouth-watering chocolatey chocolate creations. We just had no more room left. But look at them! Don't they look fantastic!]
